W:W trips are different than what you will find anywhere else. Our trips emphasize travel education and cultural education as well as immersion in the local destination. W:W travelers are mentally active and are curious about the world around them. By learning how to travel and interact with locals, you will break down the cultural barriers and learn how to appreciate and absorb the world around you. Come and live the W:W EXPERIENCE!

All Wanderlust:Wanderlearn trips are small groups only (think 6-15 travelers). We do this so that you can have an up-close-and-personal, hands-on travel experience. ITINERARY

Day 1 – 2: Flight to Australia Thursday November 2 / Friday November 3, 2017

Flight to Sydney, Australia. Due to the crossing of the International Date line, your flight will depart on Thursday evening and arrive on Saturday. But no worries! The lost day will be made up on your return flight when you gain an extra day. Please see “FLIGHTS” section below for more details.

Day 3: Sydney Saturday November 4, 2017

There is no other city quite like Sydney! A bustling, modern metropolis built right on the ocean, Sydney is sunshine by day, glitz by night! Today we’ll start with a walk through the Royal Botanic Gardens. Located right downtown, the views of the harbour and the Opera House from the Gardens are the best around! We’ll then head over to the world famous Opera House, which is as magnificent up close as from afar! We’ll then catch lunch at one of the many yummy nearby cafes. After lunch it’s time to hit the Sydney Harbour Bridge. With fabulous views of the harbour, we’ll walk to the center of this world famous bridge. (For those truly daring souls, we strongly recommend trying the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb). We will then stroll through the famous districts of The Rocks and Circular Quay – both great places to shop, have a coffee with locals or just sit back and enjoy the sunshine! For dinner, Sydney has a wide range of fabulous choices, and if you still have some oompha in your step, come join us for a night out on the town!

Day 4: Bondi Beach Sunday November 5, 2017

Today we are going to relax Sydney style at Australia’s most famous beach, Bondi Beach. After catching up on sleep and enjoying a leisurely breakfast, we’ll head up to Bondi. About 30 minutes from Sydney, Bondi Beach is best on a Sunday. Have some quiet time relaxing in the sun, learn to surf, drink margaritas at a beach bar, or take the beautiful 6km beach walk from Bondi to Coogee – you might even meet one of the famous Bondi Beach Lifeguards! Whatever your interests, there’s something to suit everyone!

Day 5: Manly and Sydney Harbour National Park Monday November 6, 2017

There’s nothing like seeing Sydney from the water, a must do! In the morning we’ll set out by ferry to the district of Manly and to Sydney Harbour National Park. See native wildlife living in rare pockets of bushland once common around Sydney, take a fascinating walk to explore the park’s cultural history, or just spend the day island hopping. The views of the Sydney Opera House from the water as the sun sets are simply stunning -the perfect end to our time in Sydney!

Day 6: Airlie Beach Tuesday November 7, 2017

After breakfast we’ll depart for the airport for our flight to Proserpine (see “FLIGHTS” section below). Upon arrival, we’ll take a shuttle to nearby laid-back Airlie Beach. A beautiful beach town, Airlie Beach is a wonderful place to get lost (without getting lost!). With a beautiful public swim park – the Airlie Beach Lagoon – you can enjoy the sun without the saltwater. Let’s top the day off with dinner at Mr. Bones Airlie Beach for great pizza and stellar views!

Day 7: Gateway to Whitsunday Islands Wednesday November 8, 2017

Today is the stuff of dreams!!! The gateway to the Whitsunday Islands, Airlie Beach is beautiful to hike and explore. Alternatively, you may wish to take a sailboat out to the islands. The Whitsunday Islands have to be the most stunningly beautiful white sand beaches on earth! We recommend exploring the rightfully famous Whitehaven Beach and get your first taste of snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef! For many there’s nothing like the wind in your hair while on-board a sailboat, but if a boat is not your thing, you might want to consider taking a small plane tour of the famous Heart Reef. After a full day of fun, we’ll head back to our accommodations at Airlie Beach for a good night’s sleep!

Day 8: Townsville Thursday November 9, 2017

Following breakfast, we’ll depart for Townsville – the charming non-touristy small city is an underrated spot with tons to offer. My favorite part of Townsville is definitely its “Strand” – an endless beach esplanade directly on the ocean. Townsville also boasts highly rated museums, an excellent aquarium, two major sporting teams and a young, fun populace. After spending the afternoon in Townsville, we’ll hop on the ferry to Magnetic Island.

Day 9: Magnetic Island Friday November 10, 2017

Magnetic Island, or Maggie Island as the locals call it, is located in the Great Barrier Reef and is a quiet, laid-back, off-the-beaten path place to relax and take in Australia. Magnetic Island was named for its apparent magnetic effect on the compasses of Captain Cook as he and his ships passed by in 1770. With its untouched national park lands, it is nature the way Australia was intended to be. We’ll be staying in A-frame style cabins, the perfect spot to relax and catch up on a book or just watch the wallabies hopping by your door. If snuggling with a koala is your thing, you may wish to take a tour of the Koala Sanctuary – a highly rated rescue sanctuary. In the evening, we recommend a kayaking sunset tour and dinner along the beach. A breath of fresh air, Maggie Island is a delight to the senses!

Day 10: Cairns Saturday November 11, 2017

After breakfast we will catch a ferry back to the mainland and then catch a bus that will take us up to Cairns – the most famous gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. After checking in to our accommodations, you’ll have the evening free to explore the town. Make sure you check out its boardwalk and try one of its many great restaurants!

Day 11: Great Barrier Reef Sunday November 12, 2017

The top two ways to explore the Reef are either by Scuba diving or by snorkeling. Today is our chance to take in the Reef up close and personal! There are many opportunities to explore the Reef and the recommended trip is we’ll head out to the Reef on a boat that accommodates BOTH Scuba divers and snorkelers. This way, no matter your preference, you’ll be able to fully experience the Great Barrier Reef!

Day 12: Daintree Rainforest and Aboriginal Culture/Cairns Monday November 13, 2017

A tropical rainforest about 100km north of the city of Cairns, Daintree Rainforst takes you back in time with flora and fauna of yore. Explore more of the Aboriginal culture of the region. Today you’ll have the option of joining us to explore the rainforest, or for those true reef buffs, you may prefer to spend a second day diving the reef. It’s up to YOU what you want to get out of YOUR trip!

Day 13: Depart Cairns Tuesday November 14, 2017

All good things must come to a close. On Tuesday, we recommend you depart Cairns anytime you wish on November 14. Please see “FLIGHTS” section below for more details.
